EU plastics strategy: the Commission promotes the market for recycled plastics
Following the European campaign on commitment under the European Plastics Strategy, the Commission presented an ex-ante evaluation showing that the European industry is strongly involved in plastics recycling. With an ongoing commitment, 20 million tonnes of plastics could be upgraded by 2025. However, from the point of view of market demand, so far the demand for recycled plastics is limited to 5 million tonnes, making it clear that further efforts are needed to achieve the target of total consumer reabsorption of plastics from plastic waste recycling.
First Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, responsible for sustainable development, said that in order to achieve a circular plastics economy, it is essential that more recycled plastics are directed to new products. The Commission will continue to encourage initiatives that help boost the market for recycled plastics in the EU and will work with stakeholders to facilitate their close cooperation along the supply chain to achieve this goal. To this end, a first meeting is planned for an in-depth discussion in 2019.
